"Spontaneous." As a rule, I do not naturally lean toward this tendency. I am much more a list-type person that likes to plan ahead and know what is coming up next. Doing something that "arises from a momentary impulse", doesn't happen very often.
Oh, I do have my moments. Take last week for example. I suggested to my husband that we needed to take a mid-week break to go to one of our favorite restaurants. Moby Dicky's has great seafood and a lovely scenic view right on the lake and is a short 10 minute drive. We call it a mini-vacation...away for an hour or so to clear our minds from the stress of the week. It was fun to be spontaneous.
Then I got to thinking...is God ever spontaneous? That's when I noticed another definition, "controlled and directed internally." Well, yes that can be true of God because He is in control of everything. Holy Spirit also enables me to be controlled and directed by Him internally instead of being so swayed by external circumstances.
Another definition I found was "proceeding from natural feeling without external constraint." That reminded me of His great, unfathomable, and all-encompassing love. It is natural for Him to love because that is who He is. "Consider the kind of extravagant love the Father has lavished on us—He calls us children of God! It’s true; we are His beloved children." I John 3:1 (The Voice)
The last definition I read was "developing without apparent external influence or force" which makes me think of God as the Creator of the universe. He developed everything that exists by His voice and gives us creativity too. "For He spoke, and all things came into being. A single command from His lips, and all creation obeyed and stood its ground." Psalm 33:9
How are you being "spontaneous" this week?
This post was prompted by Kate Motaung's "Five Minute Friday," which she hosts on the Five Minute Friday website. Kate posts a single word each week and each blogger sets a timer for 5 minutes to write and then posts, with little editing. (Some weeks I have more trouble with that part than others.) Check out the other writers this week!
