//Back in November 2007, after several trips to the local humane society, my husband and daughters finally persuaded me to rescue a dog. Now mind you, I grew up with cats, never had a dog in my life. But, I signed the papers to bring this 6-year-old black lab home and rescue her from most likely losing her sweet life too early. Sophie fit into our family fairly well and while I didn't admit it at first, she was adorable. Even though she crossed over that rainbow bridge over 5 years ago, we still talk about her. She was more like a cat than a dog at times. She didn't fetch, she licked herself clean, even after a bath, and at 65 lbs she thought she was a lap dog, but filled a lap and part of the couch! She was loved by all of the 4 of us and spoiled.
Sophie always seemed so grateful to have been rescued from what we believe was an "outside, chained to a post most of the time" life. She still lived in fear of storms but was sheltered in our bedroom instead of outside when they came. She was free to run around the house and we took her on lovely walks where she could smell the flowers and be out in the sun and snow!
As I have thought about her and looked through old photos // I am reminded of how God has rescued me! I too have been fearful of storms, both literally and figuratively, but Jesus reminds me in Isaiah 46:4 (NIV):
Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
He rescued me from certain death because of my sin nature, Romans 6:23. He has also rescued me from the chains that the enemy tries to keep me in. I'm also convinced that Jesus rescues me on a daily basis from accidents as I drive to work, from saying or doing the wrong thing; although I don't always choose to listen to Holy Spirit and make mistakes anyway. Jesus is the awesome and ultimate forgiver so that we can walk in His joy and freedom, empowered by Holy Spirit!
What has God rescued you from and released you in freedom to do?
This post was prompted by Kate Motaung's "Five Minute Friday," which she hosts on the Five Minute Friday website. Kate posts a single word each week and each blogger sets a timer for 5 minutes to write and then posts, with little editing. (Some weeks I have more trouble with that part than others.) Check out the other writers this week!
